The POSNA Committee on Underserved Regions (COUR) is creating an international forum in which to exchange collective insights, innovations, and approaches to problems encountered in our work in resource-poor environments. Through this compilation of tips and creative solutions we plan to draw from the varied experience of professionals who are engaged in the care of children with musculoskeletal conditions throughout the world. We are creating both an on-line resource that can be continuously updated, as well as a downloadable PDF version. Our vision is to have a resource that allows entry, retrieval and dissemination of creative solutions to commonly encountered problems, regardless of location in the world.
Partnership
This project will be partnered with HELP (Health Education using Low-cost Publications) at www.global-help.org, which, since 2003, has provided free health-care information to developing countries and is committed to making medical knowledge accessible worldwide. Traditional sources of health-care information in journals and medical books are expensive, unavailable and quickly become out of date. Digital publishing can be created at low cost, widely disseminated and constantly updated. In addition to the opportunity to download any and all publications free of charge from HELP's web-site, any of the materials may be printed at low cost. Since 2003, there have been a quarter of a million PDF downloads of HELP publications in over 200 countries, with a 51% increase between the last two years. An example of successful dissemination of information is the "Clubfoot: Ponseti Management" manual, which was downloaded nearly 10,000 times in 2009.
How To Contribute
We ask that interested PONSA members and other health-care workers in the international community (i.e. orthopaedic surgeons, rehabilitation physicians, orthotists, prosthetists, therapist, anesthesiologists, orthopaedic technicians) participate. Contributors will receive acknowledgment of their work. Contributions must be submitted on a Word document to posna@aaos.org and questions@global-help.org with a maximum of two pages of text (1,000 words), including:
• Title.
• Name, institution, and contact information.
• Brief introduction stating the problem.
• Discuss solution to the problem: give specifics about resources, materials, how to find materials, costs, alternatives, benefits, and risks.
• Key lesson learned.
• Include up to three key references.
• Include several key images with captions.
Please feel free to also contact HELP for more information at
questions@global-help.org.
