Biography

Lynn T. Staheli, M.D., is the founder of the Global HELP organization. Based on his experience while teaching in 37 countries, Dr. Staheli became aware of the critical lack of practical, current, and affordable health-care information in the developing world. After his retirement from clinical practice, he focused on promoting the use of electronic publishing in making health-care information more widely available and affordable.

During the past decade, Dr. Staheli designed, wrote, and illustrated color textbooks using computer technology. He has published 85 peer-reviewed research studies and published 16 books, six of which are currently in print, and one text now in its third edition, and is also the founding Editor and currently Co-Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics.

Lynn's interest in service spans his lifetime –- as a university student, he was the President of the largest student service organization on campus, and edited the yearbooks for his university and medical school. He founded and funded the International Scholarship for Pediatric Orthopaedics, providing overseas physicians an opportunity to study in the United States. He is also board member of The Rainier Foundation, a non-profit organization promoting people making a difference in their communities.

His research on developmental variations during childhood showed that conditions such as flexible flatfeet, intoeing, and bowlegs are normal variations that resolve without treatment. This information contributed significantly to the decline of unnecessary, ineffective, and unpleasant treatments, like corrective shoes, night splints, braces, and shoes.

Lynn's awards have included: AOA Award in medical school, AOA Guest Resident Award, Berg Traveling Fellowship, Distinguished Achievement Award from the Orthopaedic Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Pediatric Orthopaedic Society, and the Distinguished Alumni Merit of Honor award from the University of Utah. In 2001, The Staheli Chair for Research in Pediatric Orthopaedics was established at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Lynn is named in "Best Doctors in America" and "Who's Who in America."

Lynn was Director of Orthopaedics at the Children's Hospital in Seattle for fifteen years, is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington, and spends most of his time working for the Global HELP Organization.
